How to install Microsoft Office

Which installation method do you need?

Before you start

• Uninstall other Office versions, including preinstalled Microsoft 365 trials, in Settings › Apps › Installed apps. Two Office versions on one PC often cause activation errors.
• Make sure the PC runs a supported Windows version and has an internet connection.
• Have your 25-character product key ready.

Install Office Professional Plus with the Office Deployment Tool

1. Download the Office Deployment Tool from the Microsoft Download Center, run it, and extract it to a folder such as C:\ODT.
2. In that folder, create configuration.xml:

Use the values for your version:

3. Open Command Prompt as administrator, go to the folder (cd C:\ODT) and run setup.exe /configure configuration.xml.
4. Wait for the installer to finish. It downloads Office from Microsoft, which can take several minutes.

Change en-us for another language, set OfficeClientEdition="32" for 32-bit, or generate the file with Microsoft’s Office Customization Tool at config.office.com.

Install Office for Mac

1. Open the Office for Mac installer package (.pkg) and follow the steps.
2. Run the Volume License Serializer package provided with your order.
3. Open Word. Office is activated without a product key or sign-in.

Activate Office

Open Word. If you added PIDKEY to the configuration file, Office activates automatically when online. Otherwise go to File › Account › Change Product Key and enter your key. If online activation fails, see how to activate Office by phone.
